Wordpress for a Church website

I run the website for my local church. Just recently I received an email from someone considering using Wordpress for his church’s website asking for my opinion on it’s suitability. Here’s what he asked:

I am currently reviewing possible options for developing my local church's site and wondered what your opinion of Wordpress was in relation to the use within a church environment?

Here’s my answer: we have been using Wordpress for our church since October 2009. Before that one of the congregation managed a static HTML website for many years which was published by FTP on weekly basis. This was, of course, a burden for the website administrator as he was the only person capable of updating the content. What we wanted to do was to remove this dependency on a single person to update the website and have the ability to have multiple people update the content without requiring too much technical knowledge. I can say that this is a success - we have a small group of website editors who update the content regularly and keep the content ‘fresh’. Each week we send a link to our newsletter using a free account on
Mailchimp which works very well. The website is hosted at an ISP of our choice - X9 Internet - who have proven to be very reliable and charge reasonable prices.
